Few weeks ago, something interesting had been become a hot topic in my workplace.
Two Hens were spotted nesting the eggs near the basketball court!
I love chicken since young especially when a chicken family was roaming around exploring the world - Rooster stood there handsomely and looked out for dangerous, Hen will shelter and guide her chicks, and those little chicks just "cheap cheap" their grow-up journey.
And now even since I grew up in a urban area, seeing a free-roaming chicken family is practically impossible especially in Singapore, some people just don't like the crowing... (news about it, this and this) Sad...
Quote: “ONLY 20 RESIDENTS COMPLAINED. WHAT ABOUT THOSE RESIDENTS WHO DIDN’T COMPLAIN? THIS IS RIDICULOUS. WE JUST KEEP DEFORESTING THE AREA, PUSHING THEM OUT OF THEIR NATURAL HABITAT AND NOW YOU JUST CULL THEM OFF BECAUSE OF 20 RESIDENTS…I THINK IT’S AT LEAST 3 GENERATIONS OF CHICKEN FAMILY ALREADY. YOU CAN SEE THE FATHER ROOSTER, MOTHER HEN AND THE BABY CHICKENS ROAMING ABOUT TOGETHER AS A FAMILY. NOW ALL DEAD. THEY HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO GO. HUMANS FORCED THEM OUT OF THEIR HABITAT AND NOW WE CULL THEM!”
Well... We human really... the main problem for world peace... anyway back to the chicken. I also found the Rooster roaming around the area.
Father of those eggs
Handsome rooster
I will love to pet it :3
Morning Crowing
Tried to use my 3x zoom can never be good than DSLR lens.
Those days while the Hens nesting the eggs, our kind attendant setup a simple barn to provide them shelter from rain and sun.
WAKE UP WAKE UP! Those Hens weren't happy anyone near them.
Simple cover up and at least something.
After 21 days, they hatched! The news spread like fire in the office, I grabbed my camera and be there to witness the scene myself.
Successfully hatched!
Aww... Chick chick in two colours - white and yellow!
The hens were teaching them how to feed
The attendant helped to distract the hens so that we can have a clearer shot.
Just looked at them
Simply melt our heart. awwww :3
The hens were back after distraction.
They taught the chicks how to feed
Parental guidance
Managed to get two different coloured chicks
Feeding feeding
The hens didn't want us to get close to the chicks.
(Ju) As you can see, there were some other unhatched eggs at the side. Hope there will be more of the chicks.
(Ju) hmmm... around 10-12 of them
(Ju) chip chip chip
(Ju) thank you Ju for this awesome gif
(Ju) Feeding time
(Ju) Let's count how many are there?
(Ju) Fighting for attention and food.
Chicks in our hands
The attendant worried that cat or anything could happen to them, so he shifted their location.
For those unhatched eggs, some of the staff spotted one or two eggs trying to hatch out, so they decided to help it.
Done!
But bad news was.... that chick die.... there was a reason why hen doesn't continue to warm those remaining eggs because she knew those eggs will never make it... so she abandoned those failed eggs. I guess life is just too fragile and there isn't 100% successful. Many issues involved with it.
Later on, I heard someone took the hens and chicks to foster them because they might be culled by some angry Singaporeans, due to nonsense bird flu disease, over-populated, and noise... Hope they will be okay. But... The chickens never end well...
The rooster still had a hen to accompany him but the residents made complains and they were removed from the area....
Overall, this chicken-experience taught me a few things,
- the kids love animals. Deep in their naughty side, they do have their sweet side.
- Not because I am okay or I like it, mean other people should be like me. There will always people who don't think alike.
- Sometimes it is bad to hear comments like how to cook them and how tonic they are...
I can't do much but to pray for them... Hope one day they will realise that it is hurtful if the table turned around.
- Life isn't smooth and certainty from egg hatching and companionship.
All the best to the chickens.
(Loo) One of the Best shot taken by Loo, I requested this picture from him and the title of this shot: 母子
A random painting hanged at my workplace and no one knew anything about it. I guessed it is for the chicken.
