Product - Biollante Toy Figure

Hi Blog,

This might seem random, but today felt like a childhood dream that came true. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Japanese Godzilla movie series, but when I was young, I was fascinated by Ultraman and all sorts of monsters—especially those with unique, non-human forms that stood on two legs. Each monster had its own distinct features, just like creatures in nature. Maybe that’s why I was drawn to Pokémon too, though I avoided getting into it too much, knowing I wouldn’t be able to stop once I started.

So, what’s the big deal today? Well, I’m going to discuss one of the monsters I adore - Biollante.
In many Godzilla films, the monsters typically receive official model figures. However, one of my all-time favourites, Biollante, has never had an official figure released, or rather, I can't say it doesn't have one, just that I don't have a good quality version figuring.

(Image from Markalite.Substack) Biollante is such a standout monster—its design is incredible!
It has the menacing mouth of an alligator, sharp tusks like a hippopotamus, and thorn-covered tentacles, all wrapped in a monstrous, plant-like form. It’s also massive—larger than Godzilla! It was even more unique because plant-based monsters were rare in Kaiju (giant monster) films.

The poster for Godzilla vs. Biollante was eerie yet thought-provoking, hinting at the consequences of humans trying to play god.
Unfortunately, the movie’s battle scenes were somewhat underwhelming, but that didn’t change my love for Biollante. I was obsessed.
Sorry for digressing; back to the topic. What I meant to say was that there were no good Biollante figures available at the time. Even when toy manufacturers did produce some, the designs were disappointing—nothing captured the true essence of the monster. Let me show you a few examples that I have gathered.

(Image credit from Reddit) This is the first example from Trendmasters. What are your thoughts? Personally, I might be excited to have a Biollante figure, but I will not purchase this. A Biollante with legs? No no.
I am completely turned off by this Biollante figure... It appears to be creeping, tiptoeing, and attempting to hide itself. Not to mention that they were given eyes that resembled puppies. So no no!
I complained about its bipedal stand and the puppy-like eyes, but they lack the iconic menacing and fierce mouth. I understand the limitations of creating teeth on a plastic figure, but by painting it white, it only appears that Biollante has a set of human teeth. But when I was younger and had fewer options, this was probably what I could afford.
I read some Reddit posts about Biollante figure feedback, and it appeared that we shared the same sentiment, so Bandai tried to release something less inferior, and while its menacing mouth could still be improved, obtaining it at the time was difficult for me.
Overall, it will look like this plushie, which is quite well done, to be honest.
As I got older, Biollante finally received the proper model figures it deserved. The majority of them are intricately detailed and massive in size. However, they were extremely expensive and limited in production. Owning one seemed like an impossible dream. Allow me to show you the products.

(Image credit from Banzaihobby) It is a limited edition Biollante commemorating its 70th anniversary, with improvements to details such as texture and mouth. Not the best, but it is closer to the previous one in terms of quality; it also has movable joints, which allows for more imagination.
(Image from mondoshop.com) Speaking of improvement, this Soft Vinyl Biollante has everything in chibi style. I love this so much. Looking at my wallet... sigh...
(Image from Teslatoys.com) Biollante X-plus Deforeal Vinyl Figure! Chibi style and a HIGHLY DETAILED Version than the previous. OH MY GOD! I WANT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crying when the wallet is staring at me... 😓
(Product from The Articulation Series) Next on the list is S.H.MonsterArts Biollante. This figure allows movement in all its joints and is truly massive! I found one for sale in a local hobby shop for S550. Sigh... Check out the preview video... I just imagined myself doing it.
X-Plus Kaiji also comes in a non-chibi version, measuring around 25cm. Massive! I can't decide which one to get if I'm loaded... If I'm loaded, I will get BOTH!
On a serious note... If I am really loaded, I will get this figure from Kata Studio, measured 130cm in width and 65cm in height! Essentially, the very best of the best. You can click on the link to view the photos. However, even if I were able to acquire this, it would arrive unpainted version.
(Product listed on eBay) While searching, I came across this version. I’m not sure which company produced it, but it definitely appears to be an unpainted version. On eBay, this seller is offering it at a reasonable price with a 20% discount. I'm really tempted to buy it, but I know I can't afford it.

Then, out of nowhere, I stumbled upon someone selling a Biollante figure on Carousell. The seller sold it at my comfort cost level.
Here I have it! It wasn’t from the same premium collection, and it was much smaller—less than 20cm.
But despite its size, the design was well-designed, capturing the essence of Biollante better than most previous models. It was also a limited edition, making it a rare find. At an affordable price, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.
Finally, after all these years, I have a Biollante figure in my hands. It may not be the massive, high-end model I once dreamed of, but it’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to owning a piece of my childhood dream.

That said… I can’t deny that a part of me still wants to own the premium version on eBay. But at the end of the day, it's like anyone dreaming of owning a luxury car, designer goods, rare jewellery, classic watches, or a lavish home—a dream that may or may not come true. For now, I’ll just keep it in my blog and ‘own’ it here in my imagination.

My rational side asks, Do I really need this? Is it worth the cost? The inner conflict between passion and practicality, desire and discipline, is real. I’d love to have it, but I also know that the money could go toward something more meaningful.

Still, collecting something I truly love isn’t necessarily wasteful—as long as it brings lasting joy and isn’t just an impulse buy. My wallet has the final say. As the saying goes, "沒有那樣大的頭,就不要戴那樣大的帽子" (If your head isn’t big enough, don’t wear a big hat).

At least I got the smaller model, which still gives me the satisfaction of owning Biollante without the financial burden.

Jeff
